Recently I read Genesis 32. In Genesis 32 Jacob wrestles with a stranger, and in verse 28, this person [who we learn is a divine being] gives Jacob a new name. This is a not a one time occurrence. Throughout the Bible when a person has an encounter with the Lord something interesting happens – their name is changed. But why? Because when you have a face-to-face encounter with God, you don’t just remain the same. You cannot.
It is such a powerful experience that it transforms a person’s identity. This is the biblical testimony, and it is the testimony of millions of Christians.
Really encountering God changes who you are.
